Two Words

Trader Joe’s. Dark Chocolate. Powerberry madness. Yum yum. Oh my giddy aunt! Yes, I know…that’s 4 words.  Give a sugar-lovin’ lass some grace…I ate (almost) no sugar for 100 days!  And my brain still works.  In fact…and I hate to admit this…it works better.  I think. I lost 11 pounds.  And am going to try […]

I Am Delusional: Christmas Tree Edition

I haven’t had a tree of my own for the past 2 years.  Christmas of 2008 was spent surrounding by boxes, a bullet proof vest, guns and the remainder of freshly acquired police gear my hubby had brought home from academy.  He graduated as a State Trooper a mere 6 days before Christmas, was posted […]

I Am Thankful

I am so thankful for life! For a savior who’s mercy is new every morning {and minute, when needed} For my amazing hubby My wildly wonderful children My incredible family… As special as some of us may be… I am {more} thankful {than ever} for a healthy family. Beautiful friends who rock my world. I […]

Family

Through Thick and Thin, in Sickness and in Health…

Warning: this is not for the faint of gut It has been a rough few days over here at our crib. My sweet man became violently ill yesterday morning, bodily fluids shooting from every possible orifice.  This virus wrecked him so completely that he found himself crawling back to bed, muscles locking, head pounding, body […]

Surprised by Grace

Head throbbed. I lay, numb.  Held hostage by my down comforter. A cry for grace went up this morning at the very moment I acknowledged that, without it, today had the potential to be an ugly one. He delivered. He always does. Today was gloriously…surprisingly…magical. The rain poured. We sat, wrapped in blankets, and watched […]

Listen, I Tell You A Mystery…

I am whipped.  And I have a smashing headache. My bed beckons. I wonder if I could call in today.  Take a day off from mothering?  Just one sick day. Or a mental health day would be grand. And the rambunctious 3 year old who usually stirs around 8am is fast asleep in MY bed, […]

Keepin' it Real

Life over Cheerios

I love my mornings with Cricket. My hubby tumbles into bed somewhere between 6:30 and 8:00.  Yes, that would be ‘am’.  Cricket stirs between 7:30 and 8:00.  Bug, usually between 9:00 and 9:30. That leaves me with plenty of time with my sweet girl.  She climbs into bed with me, or us – depending on […]

Daily Life, The Kiddos

Butter Chicken {from Heaven}

I’m on a cumin kick right now.  I used to think it was exclusively a White Chicken Chili seasoning {smashing recipe to come as the temperate drops}, and just didn’t realize how much I loved it until a friend suggested I toss some in my hummus.  Woah nelly. I’m sold.  I’m hooked.  I’m slowly cumin […]

Get Your {Ribbon} Groove On

My kids love to dance.  And we love to watch them. They also happen to enjoy adding a little spinning, prancing and poking during their elaborate dance routines with the these colorful babies in hand: {No, I didn’t say my children dance in the most safe and well-behaved way possible.  But hey.  This is real […]

The stories we tell about ourselves often begin be The stories we tell about ourselves often begin
before we know we’re telling them...
in childhood, where identity is still forming
and belonging can feel uncertain.

This week, I sit down with my friend Tiana Hawver as she shares her story of adoption, trauma, and the ache of rejection that shaped how she saw herself for years.

This one is tender. Honest.
And deeply needed.

Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow. It’s the opposit Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow.
It’s the opposite of fear.

We live between Friday and Sunday,
and most of life feels like Saturday.
Tension is not failure.
It’s formation.

If you’ve been chasing happiness
and feeling weary...
this episode might steady you.

[in the Middle of the Mess]

One year ago today, I drove 90 mph to an emergency One year ago today,
I drove 90 mph to an emergency room,
wondering if I would walk into that room
as a worried wife…
or a widow.

Another valley of despair.
Another encounter with a good, faithful God.

My update from that week still holds:

"I never imagined my shaky thumbs would be typing words like stroke, NeuroTrauma ICU, or brain surgery in reference to my healthy, 44-year-old husband.
And yet…this is where we find ourselves.
We’ve been brought to our knees—again.
But, as we’ve come to understand…
our knees are a good place to be.
Nestled in the palm of God’s hand..."

///

And today, we continue to stand amazed,
at God’s kindness to us,
and at the gift of our people:
our community, our family, our friends,
who have carried us in ways we will never be able to repay.

Looking at my handsome guy today,
strong, fully recovered, and back to work since October,
apart from the six-inch scar up the back of his head,
you’d never know a massive stroke almost took his life.

So we mark today with gratitude.
I hereby dub April 23rd:
Joe’s Stroke of Grace Day ✌

///

“When you’re in over your head,
I’ll be there with you.
When you’re in rough waters,
you will not go down.
When you’re between a rock and a hard place,
it won’t be a dead end…”

Happiness is a moving target. Joy is not. In toda Happiness is a moving target.
Joy is not.

In today’s episode, I share a story about a farmer
who trusted the wrong reference point,
and plowed his entire field crooked.
Maybe the reason we’re exhausted isn’t because we’re failing.
Maybe we’ve been fixing our eyes on something that keeps moving.

This conversation isn’t about faking joy.
It’s about cultivating it, in grief, in tension,
in the hidden places where roots grow.

What if addiction isn’t the root, but the symptom? What if addiction isn’t the root,
but the symptom?

What if beneath the behavior
there’s pain that’s never been named?

This week’s conversation is about
truth, trauma, and the slow work of healing.

And the kind of redemption
only God can write.
