The Dress Code

In this house, we have no dress code. For if my loin-fruit are even clothed in part, I am grateful. I lie.  I love it when they’re “nakey nakey”.  But that’s not generally well accepted by the store manager at Meijer.   So when they do get dressed {up}, it most often includes an eclectic […]

Guest Post: Inner Fulfillment

{click here to read it} It’s the first post I ever wrote on this blog, in February of 2011. It’s about his grace and goodness, in the midst of my mess. And it’s even truer today than it was then.

I’m guest posting over in At The Well today… {Get your bible memorization on!}

The Battle Plan

Every neurotic, type-A, control-freakish, list-loving smart woman has a battle plan for when she turns 30, right? {Just humor me here} I thought so. For as long as I can recall, I have loved the idea of being “in my thirties”.  It’s a stage of life when one has enough years under their belt to […]

Seriously…You Have Got to Try This!

It’s called Tagxedo…and it’ll rock your face off.  It is rather addictive, however, so consider yourself warned. Simply copy the text of your choice…a letter…a favorite scripture verse…a sappy post…the declaration of independence {you know, whatever floats your goat}…and paste it into their fancy little image creator, customize the shape, colors and fonts…and voila!  Fabulous […]

Squeee! Tip Junkie! And Me!

I just got a email last night from Laurie {yes, THE Laurie…from Tip Junkie} saying she wanted to feature my “No-Mess Make-Up for Little Ladies”…today. {{ Squueeeeel!! }} It’s #10 on her list of 38 Kid Crafts and Boredom Busters for Spring Break… What are you waiting for…?  Go check it out!!

Crafts and Activities

He Loves Me

I love that my husband loves me so well! I woke up yesterday morning to the sound of the blender…then the mixer…the kettle singing “ding!”, and lastly, the pitter patter of little footsteps sent to whisper…”mommy, it’s time to get up…breakfast is ready!!”. Pancakes…strawberries…bananas…freshly whipped cream…tea {oh, tea, how I adore thee!}…and these beautiful little […]

Just a Bread and Butter Post

Really. It’s about bread.  And butter. And only slightly about pretzels.  As hinted at a while back, I dug my bread machine out and have been baking up a storm throwing ingredients in it ever since.  And, as promised a while back, here are our 3 favorite recipes {so far}: * with all 3 recipes, […]

Getting Fresh {Desktop Wallpaper}

I don’t know about you, but I can feel Spring in my bones! It’s calling my name in it’s signature, lilting fashion. Wooing me. I think Spring sounds like rain.  The non-freezing kind.  And a little like a duet between Michael Buble and Colbie Caillat would sound. With the sound of defrosted birds chirping randomly […]

The Lessons Wii Learn

She stands.  10 little toes perched sweetly atop my new cutting board. Sure, it was intended for chopping veggies on, but it is fast becoming the cutest balance board on the block. She’s ready and rearing to go.  It’s time for our weekly Wii date, and it’s quite possible I’ve grown to enjoy this date […]

The stories we tell about ourselves often begin be The stories we tell about ourselves often begin
before we know we’re telling them...
in childhood, where identity is still forming
and belonging can feel uncertain.

This week, I sit down with my friend Tiana Hawver as she shares her story of adoption, trauma, and the ache of rejection that shaped how she saw herself for years.

This one is tender. Honest.
And deeply needed.

Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow. It’s the opposit Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow.
It’s the opposite of fear.

We live between Friday and Sunday,
and most of life feels like Saturday.
Tension is not failure.
It’s formation.

If you’ve been chasing happiness
and feeling weary...
this episode might steady you.

 [in the Middle of the Mess]

One year ago today, I drove 90 mph to an emergency One year ago today,
I drove 90 mph to an emergency room,
wondering if I would walk into that room
as a worried wife…
or a widow.

Another valley of despair.
Another encounter with a good, faithful God.

My update from that week still holds:

"I never imagined my shaky thumbs would be typing words like stroke, NeuroTrauma ICU, or brain surgery in reference to my healthy, 44-year-old husband.
And yet…this is where we find ourselves.
We’ve been brought to our knees—again.
But, as we’ve come to understand…
our knees are a good place to be.
Nestled in the palm of God’s hand..."

///

And today, we continue to stand amazed,
at God’s kindness to us,
and at the gift of our people:
our community, our family, our friends,
who have carried us in ways we will never be able to repay.

Looking at my handsome guy today,
strong, fully recovered, and back to work since October,
apart from the six-inch scar up the back of his head,
you’d never know a massive stroke almost took his life.

So we mark today with gratitude.
I hereby dub April 23rd:
Joe’s Stroke of Grace Day ✌

///

“When you’re in over your head,
I’ll be there with you.
When you’re in rough waters,
you will not go down.
When you’re between a rock and a hard place,
it won’t be a dead end…”
:: Isaiah 43:2

Happiness is a moving target. Joy is not. In toda Happiness is a moving target.
Joy is not.

In today’s episode, I share a story about a farmer
who trusted the wrong reference point,
and plowed his entire field crooked.
Maybe the reason we’re exhausted isn’t because we’re failing.
Maybe we’ve been fixing our eyes on something that keeps moving.

This conversation isn’t about faking joy.
It’s about cultivating it, in grief, in tension,
in the hidden places where roots grow.

What if addiction isn’t the root, but the symptom? What if addiction isn’t the root,
but the symptom?

What if beneath the behavior
there’s pain that’s never been named?

This week’s conversation is about
truth, trauma, and the slow work of healing.

And the kind of redemption
only God can write.
