White Lightning {& Homemade Chicken Stock}

I got this crazy good recipe from a friend many moons ago.  I have since lost the recipe {twice, in fact}…and this is what I recall of it. It has fast become a family favorite and a yummy staple during the chilly months of Winter. As is well depicted below, the little ones promptly empty […]

Real friendships bring out the best in you.  And, if they’re truly authentic connections with quality human beings, they will undoubtedly bring out the worst. I’ll never forget the time my best friend and I sat, puffy-eyed and frustrated, on opposite ends of my loveseat, allowing our emotions to bubble over and our disappointment in […]

Fam-damily

I’ve spent the past 4 days just soaking up time with my precious family. Making memories. Our house has been filled to the brim with love… laughter…woodstove warmth… Mexican hot chocolate on snowy days… Delicious moments with my sweet man. Having a hubby to snuggle into bed with becomes a treasured delight when it only […]

How To Keep A Toddler Boy Busy…

for ten whole minutes:   Strap on a backpack.  Preferably a monkey.  Only because it’s fun to say they have a “monkey on their back”.  But, maybe you get out more than I do. Latch the top buckle.  Let him latch the lower one.  When you hear a shriek of delight, simply unlatch. Occasionally you […]

Sweet Girl

Precious love.  You delight my heart! You are the sweetest wee lass I have ever met. And you have the most tender, little heart.  Your compassion melts me. I love listening to you talk…to your family and friends, to yourself, to your many adopted loin-fruit.  And to your husband, whose name and identity changes daily.  […]

Scrumptious Roast Pork Loin {Rub Recipe}

The best pork loin in the world starts with a great rub {as do many other great things, ahem}. A rub is like a dry marinade that can be applied as little a 20 minutes before roasting, or as long as overnight.  The longer the infusion, the more intense the flavor. And aren’t the herbs […]

A Whole Lot of Nothing Much

We’ve been busy around here: I have, for the second time in my short life {okay fine…for the 2nd time in 3 short months}, deleted everything on our DVR.  Every.single.thing.gone.  Just because I was trying to delete a single episode of Dinner: Impossible.  It’s a good thing my husband really loves me {and forgives quickly}. […]

Ice{icle} Pops

Cricket loves the cold.  And she adores ice…and you know, ice-cream…ice-cubes…iced-decaf-mochas. So it stands to reason that icicles would delight her merry little soul, yes? That would be a “YES!” And, I should add, she is incredibly proud of her mad ice sucking skillz…and wise avoidance of the “yellow snow” {As am I}

Hiding It In My Heart

I stink at reading my bible. There, I said it. Oh, and memorizing scripture?  Ha.  I have grandiose plans to…to type up my favorites scriptures, post them around my house {on the bathroom mirror, by the kitchen sink, etc.}, and “chew” on them throughout the day… But, as I mentioned, I stink at consistently getting […]

Bug + No Meds + No SVT = Delicious Celebration!

How do we celebrate a “so-far successful” weaning of our wee one off of his heart medication…? Why, the same way we celebrate most things… with animal crackers dipped in Nutella, of course. But then again…who needs animal crackers when you’ve got a face? {Celebrating the two week mark of no meds…and no SVT!!}

The stories we tell about ourselves often begin be The stories we tell about ourselves often begin
before we know we’re telling them...
in childhood, where identity is still forming
and belonging can feel uncertain.

This week, I sit down with my friend Tiana Hawver as she shares her story of adoption, trauma, and the ache of rejection that shaped how she saw herself for years.

This one is tender. Honest.
And deeply needed.

Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow. It’s the opposit Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow.
It’s the opposite of fear.

We live between Friday and Sunday,
and most of life feels like Saturday.
Tension is not failure.
It’s formation.

If you’ve been chasing happiness
and feeling weary...
this episode might steady you.

[in the Middle of the Mess]

One year ago today, I drove 90 mph to an emergency One year ago today,
I drove 90 mph to an emergency room,
wondering if I would walk into that room
as a worried wife…
or a widow.

Another valley of despair.
Another encounter with a good, faithful God.

My update from that week still holds:

"I never imagined my shaky thumbs would be typing words like stroke, NeuroTrauma ICU, or brain surgery in reference to my healthy, 44-year-old husband.
And yet…this is where we find ourselves.
We’ve been brought to our knees—again.
But, as we’ve come to understand…
our knees are a good place to be.
Nestled in the palm of God’s hand..."

And today, we continue to stand amazed,
at God’s kindness to us,
and at the gift of our people:
our community, our family, our friends,
who have carried us in ways we will never be able to repay.

Looking at my handsome guy today,
strong, fully recovered, and back to work since October,
apart from the six-inch scar up the back of his head,
you’d never know a massive stroke almost took his life.

So we mark today with gratitude.
I hereby dub April 23rd:
Joe’s Stroke of Grace Day ✌

“When you’re in over your head,
I’ll be there with you.
When you’re in rough waters,
you will not go down.
When you’re between a rock and a hard place,
it won’t be a dead end…”

Happiness is a moving target. Joy is not. In toda Happiness is a moving target.
Joy is not.

In today’s episode, I share a story about a farmer
who trusted the wrong reference point,
and plowed his entire field crooked.
Maybe the reason we’re exhausted isn’t because we’re failing.
Maybe we’ve been fixing our eyes on something that keeps moving.

This conversation isn’t about faking joy.
It’s about cultivating it, in grief, in tension,
in the hidden places where roots grow.

What if addiction isn’t the root, but the symptom? What if addiction isn’t the root,
but the symptom?

What if beneath the behavior
there’s pain that’s never been named?

This week’s conversation is about
truth, trauma, and the slow work of healing.

And the kind of redemption
only God can write.
