My Day with Moppitt

Meet *Moppit.  She’s the 5 day old {teeny weeny} baby bunny that spent her final 30 hours – or most of it – nestled in my less-than-ample cleavage.  I enjoyed every minute we were able to care for this sweet little baby. We discovered Moppitt and her two siblings when Marley dug up their nest […]

Erma & Martha, the Exchange

{I heard these letters between Martha Stewart and Erma Bombeck read at the Ladies Day I spoke at in April…and loved them!  I haven’t the foggiest notion who to credit, so if you know…drop me a line so I can give credit to this most brilliant lass} Hi Erma, This perfectly delightful note is being […]

I was Weeding the Vegetable Garden…

{and other lame excuses for why I’ve been such a delinquent blogger lately} I was busy growing sprouts… I was locking myself, my children and our pup out of our house while my husband slept soundly in our room.  Good thing one of our screens doesn’t lock properly into it’s window and Bean was willing […]

Independence Was Declared

…from all semblance of self-control, whatsoever. I mean, just look at this cake!  Who, in the presence of this scrumptious hunk of fruity, cream-cheesy goodness, would be able to maintain any sense of composure and dietary dignity?  Not I, my friend, not I. Especially when it has your name written in blueberries on it.  It’s […]

At The Well: Guest Post {The Ultimate Plan Review}

I’m a born list maker.  A passionate, type-A list maker. The need for uncluttered organization in my life is evidenced by the sheer quantity of baskets and totes I own.  They neatly hold my household together behind the scenes. Purging, cleaning and organization thrill me to no end.  Maybe it’s the sense of peace it […]

{Proud as a Peacock} July Desktop Wallpaper

I’ve always loved fireworks {especially when my family flew over them on our way home to South Africa one year}, but the actual significance of July fourth never really hit home to me.  Until now. You see, this will be my very first Independence Day as a US citizen. Thank you.  Thank you very much. […]

Meet Marley {Mae}

Meet the newest addition to our family…Marley Mae!   She was a precious gift from a precious family…and we’re smitten.  Even one day into our adventure with her. She’s delightfully affectionate, ridiculously well behaved, and deliciously sweet! {swoon} Welcome, Marley Mae, we’re absolutely thrilled to have you!   {who knew an admittedly non-dog-person could so […]

Empty Nest Syndrome {Sad Fern Interview}

Hello sad fern. Howdy. Tell me…why “sad” fern”? {awkward silence}…have you looked at me lately? Ri-ight.  Sad.  Very sad. Hey now, I was on clearance at SAMS, you know.  Cut me some slack. You got it.  So…I hear you’ve been busy over the past few weeks. Why yes, I have been.  Just a few days […]

Blog Hopping {Hostess Gift Edition}

  Miranda Walker {from Narrating Life} invited me to participate in her blog hop.  It’s my first.  So I hopped right in. And here we go! The theme is…drum roll, please…hostess gift ideas! Due to my love affair with fresh herbs, I chose a potted fennel plant as my gift {partly because it’s what my […]

The stories we tell about ourselves often begin be The stories we tell about ourselves often begin
before we know we’re telling them...
in childhood, where identity is still forming
and belonging can feel uncertain.

This week, I sit down with my friend Tiana Hawver as she shares her story of adoption, trauma, and the ache of rejection that shaped how she saw herself for years.

This one is tender. Honest.
And deeply needed.

Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow. It’s the opposit Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow.
It’s the opposite of fear.

We live between Friday and Sunday,
and most of life feels like Saturday.
Tension is not failure.
It’s formation.

If you’ve been chasing happiness
and feeling weary...
this episode might steady you.

 [in the Middle of the Mess]

Listen wherever you stream podcasts.
One year ago today, I drove 90 mph to an emergency One year ago today,
I drove 90 mph to an emergency room,
wondering if I would walk into that room
as a worried wife…
or a widow.

Another valley of despair.
Another encounter with a good, faithful God.

My update from that week still holds:

"I never imagined my shaky thumbs would be typing words like stroke, NeuroTrauma ICU, or brain surgery in reference to my healthy, 44-year-old husband.
And yet…this is where we find ourselves.
We’ve been brought to our knees—again.
But, as we’ve come to understand…
our knees are a good place to be.
Nestled in the palm of God’s hand..."

///

And today, we continue to stand amazed,
at God’s kindness to us,
and at the gift of our people:
our community, our family, our friends,
who have carried us in ways we will never be able to repay.

Looking at my handsome guy today,
strong, fully recovered, and back to work since October,
apart from the six-inch scar up the back of his head,
you’d never know a massive stroke almost took his life.

So we mark today with gratitude.
I hereby dub April 23rd:
Joe’s Stroke of Grace Day ✌

///

“When you’re in over your head,
I’ll be there with you.
When you’re in rough waters,
you will not go down.
When you’re between a rock and a hard place,
it won’t be a dead end…”

Happiness is a moving target. Joy is not. In toda Happiness is a moving target.
Joy is not.

In today’s episode, I share a story about a farmer
who trusted the wrong reference point,
and plowed his entire field crooked.
Maybe the reason we’re exhausted isn’t because we’re failing.
Maybe we’ve been fixing our eyes on something that keeps moving.

This conversation isn’t about faking joy.
It’s about cultivating it, in grief, in tension,
in the hidden places where roots grow.

What if addiction isn’t the root, but the symptom? What if addiction isn’t the root,
but the symptom?

What if beneath the behavior
there’s pain that’s never been named?

This week’s conversation is about
truth, trauma, and the slow work of healing.

And the kind of redemption
only God can write.
