I’m Alive!

We’ve been a busy bunch around here over the past two weeks! Between family festivities, the dynamic food-friends-fun combination, weeding and watering our growing veggie garden, multiple dips in the lake, our first camping trip, a week of recovery from laser eye surgery, and far too many trips to the Whippy Dip to mention, I […]

The Big Unveil : Simply Bloom {Design}

“Happy birthday to me…as you shall soon see… I’ve been working my heinie off…on Simply Bloom {Design}, my glee!” Scratch that.  I have no mad skills in the rhyming department, it is evident. After chewing a while on the fact that Pink Kangaroo Design was just too froo-froo a business name for the more corporate […]

P:31 & Responsibility Chart {Printable}

  Well, my friends, my 31 days are officially up tomorrow…and at this point I’ve made it through 27 of the 31 “spaces”.  While the perfectionist in me is tempted to be disappointed, the considerably larger portion of me that has grown to be more realistic amidst the chaos of parenting… is quite thrilled, actually. […]

Ek-spek-tey-shuhn {take 2}

Real friendships bring out the best in you.  And, if they’re truly authentic connections with quality human beings, they will undoubtedly bring out the worst. I’ll never forget the time my best friend and I sat, puffy-eyed and frustrated, on opposite ends of my loveseat, allowing our disappointment in each other to bubble to the […]

Peonies & Aperture {& your June Desktop Wallpaper}

This is what happens when you put fuschia, aqua and avocado green in the same square foot. It creates beauty of epic proportion. When we were house hunting 3 years ago, anticipating my disappointment at the arrival of a new Spring without the 100+ tulips that I had grown accustomed to {and waited with baited […]

Sunshine + Water = Slippery Kids

Our wonderful neighbors spent the entire day here on Saturday with us; weeding, digging, transplanting & sowing.  It was a stunningly warm day and much was accomplished in the garden. Have I mentioned yet that we have the coolest neighbors in the history of ever? While we played for hours in the dirt, our kids […]

Lettuce Get Real

I’ve got gardening on the brain.  As I weed through my house {pun absolutely intended}, in my attempt to rid it of all chaos and clutter {and superfluous crap}, I find I’m mulling over and sorting through some heart clutter as well. I got to escape for a few hours this week and get alone […]

I. am. a. cleaning. machine. 31 Bags in 31 Days is going full force in our home, and I’m discovering a thing or two in the process.  Some drawers/closets/spaces are going much faster than I anticipated (I have 5 ‘bags’ completed in 3 ‘days’), while other areas that I only allotted 1 bag/day to are […]

31 Bags {Begins}

It is finally here: the first day of our purging project…hip hip hooray! Thank you for all your encouragement and excitement.  It really delights my heart to know that I’ve struck a cord with a few of you with this wild endeavor, and can’t wait to see what we accomplish, as a group, in our […]

The stories we tell about ourselves often begin be The stories we tell about ourselves often begin
before we know we’re telling them...
in childhood, where identity is still forming
and belonging can feel uncertain.

This week, I sit down with my friend Tiana Hawver as she shares her story of adoption, trauma, and the ache of rejection that shaped how she saw herself for years.

This one is tender. Honest.
And deeply needed.

Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow. It’s the opposit Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow.
It’s the opposite of fear.

We live between Friday and Sunday,
and most of life feels like Saturday.
Tension is not failure.
It’s formation.

If you’ve been chasing happiness
and feeling weary...
this episode might steady you.

 [in the Middle of the Mess]

Listen wherever you stream podcasts.
One year ago today, I drove 90 mph to an emergency One year ago today,
I drove 90 mph to an emergency room,
wondering if I would walk into that room
as a worried wife…
or a widow.

Another valley of despair.
Another encounter with a good, faithful God.

My update from that week still holds:

"I never imagined my shaky thumbs would be typing words like stroke, NeuroTrauma ICU, or brain surgery in reference to my healthy, 44-year-old husband.
And yet…this is where we find ourselves.
We’ve been brought to our knees—again.
But, as we’ve come to understand…
our knees are a good place to be.
Nestled in the palm of God’s hand..."

///

And today, we continue to stand amazed,
at God’s kindness to us,
and at the gift of our people:
our community, our family, our friends,
who have carried us in ways we will never be able to repay.

Looking at my handsome guy today,
strong, fully recovered, and back to work since October,
apart from the six-inch scar up the back of his head,
you’d never know a massive stroke almost took his life.

So we mark today with gratitude.
I hereby dub April 23rd:
Joe’s Stroke of Grace Day ✌

///

“When you’re in over your head,
I’ll be there with you.
When you’re in rough waters,
you will not go down.
When you’re between a rock and a hard place,
it won’t be a dead end…”

Happiness is a moving target. Joy is not. In toda Happiness is a moving target.
Joy is not.

In today’s episode, I share a story about a farmer
who trusted the wrong reference point,
and plowed his entire field crooked.
Maybe the reason we’re exhausted isn’t because we’re failing.
Maybe we’ve been fixing our eyes on something that keeps moving.

This conversation isn’t about faking joy.
It’s about cultivating it, in grief, in tension,
in the hidden places where roots grow.

What if addiction isn’t the root, but the symptom? What if addiction isn’t the root,
but the symptom?

What if beneath the behavior
there’s pain that’s never been named?

This week’s conversation is about
truth, trauma, and the slow work of healing.

And the kind of redemption
only God can write.
