Pumpkin No-Bake Cookies

Be forewarned.  These bad boys masquerade around as healthy-lookin’ fellas, what with all those thickly rolled oats, walnuts and pepitas {naked pumpkin seeds} – not to mention the beta-carotene packed pumpkin puree – but don’t be fooled. They’re all sorts of bad.  In a good way, of course. They’re stickier and gooier than your average […]

Thoughts on Motherhood & November {Desktop} Wallpaper

How on earth is it possible that it’s November 2012 already? Next month is Christmas, ya’ll! Yay and… yikes. I realize I may be a little slow on the uptake here, but weren’t we just getting all giddy {and awkwardly terrified} by the notion of a new millennium around the corner? Has it really been […]

The T-Shirt {Ruffle} Scarf Tutorial

I pinned this fabulous scarf a few months ago on Pinterest, not having a clue just how simple, fun and easy it was to create, then promptly forgot about it. Ever do that?  You pin something gorgeous, think “one day…when I’m courageous enough to attempt this elaborate endeavor”, forget about it for a few months, […]

{Magic} Water Marbles

If you’ve spent any length of time looking online for creative ways to have fun with your kids, you’ve no doubt stumbled upon the sneaky little video that informs you that you can magically turn “water” into marbles with a few household ingredients. Just like that.  It’s magic!  It’s marvelous! It’s malarkey. Really.  It’s simply […]

Thoughts on Identity, Parenting & Tortilla Chips

I’m tickled pink to be sharing my messy story of redemption with another group of women this weekend.  I love, love, LOVE sharing my heart…my brokenness…His goodness with others who ache to know their Creator hasn’t abandoned them, that He is intricately involved in the details of their lives – even if behind the scenes, […]

To the Scrumptious One

…whom my heart adores! 9 years ago today, I stood before you in white – adorned with miniscule pearls, an annoyingly poufy veil, and a tan so dark it appeared my head couldn’t possibly belong to the same body – excited beyond belief to become Mrs. McMillan. And the sound of those two words together…”Joy”, […]

{An even BETTER} Homemade Laundry Detergent

I stumbled upon a recipe for homemade laundry detergent back in 2010, made it, used it up and didn’t remake it.  Not because it wasn’t cheap, and not because making my own laundry detergent didn’t make me feel like I should wear some sort of a cape, but because I missed really good smelling clothes.  […]

12 Things I Have Learned While Potty Training A Boy

1.  Do not crouch down beside the gunslinger, no matter how much encouragement and assistance you feel it necessary to deliver.  High velocity urine ricochets off open toilet seats.  And burns eyeballs. 2.  The perimeter outside which half-read magazines could lay open beside the loo, in wait for the next 2 second bathroom break, has […]

Family Rules {Printable & Desktop Wallpaper}

I’ve always been inspired by crisp, creative, colorful design…with a message!  It’s like a triple layered cake…with cream cheese frosting. And chocolate shavings. I’ve been mulling over the idea of ‘family rules’ for some time now and have been drooling over all the pallet-painted gorgeousness on Pinterest lately, in search of ‘the one’.  So when […]

The stories we tell about ourselves often begin be The stories we tell about ourselves often begin
before we know we’re telling them...
in childhood, where identity is still forming
and belonging can feel uncertain.

This week, I sit down with my friend Tiana Hawver as she shares her story of adoption, trauma, and the ache of rejection that shaped how she saw herself for years.

This one is tender. Honest.
And deeply needed.

Identity, Trauma, and the Ache of Belonging
Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow. It’s the opposit Joy isn’t the opposite of sorrow.
It’s the opposite of fear.

We live between Friday and Sunday,
and most of life feels like Saturday.
Tension is not failure.
It’s formation.

If you’ve been chasing happiness
and feeling weary...
this episode might steady you.

[in the Middle of the Mess]

Listen wherever you stream podcasts.
One year ago today, I drove 90 mph to an emergency One year ago today,
I drove 90 mph to an emergency room,
wondering if I would walk into that room
as a worried wife…
or a widow.

Another valley of despair.
Another encounter with a good, faithful God.

My update from that week still holds:

"I never imagined my shaky thumbs would be typing words like stroke, NeuroTrauma ICU, or brain surgery in reference to my healthy, 44-year-old husband.
And yet…this is where we find ourselves.
We’ve been brought to our knees—again.
But, as we’ve come to understand…
our knees are a good place to be.
Nestled in the palm of God’s hand..."

///

And today, we continue to stand amazed,
at God’s kindness to us,
and at the gift of our people:
our community, our family, our friends,
who have carried us in ways we will never be able to repay.

Looking at my handsome guy today,
strong, fully recovered, and back to work since October,
apart from the six-inch scar up the back of his head,
you’d never know a massive stroke almost took his life.

So we mark today with gratitude.
I hereby dub April 23rd:
Joe’s Stroke of Grace Day ✌

///

“When you’re in over your head,
I’ll be there with you.
When you’re in rough waters,
you will not go down.
When you’re between a rock and a hard place,
it won’t be a dead end…”

Happiness is a moving target. Joy is not. In toda Happiness is a moving target.
Joy is not.

In today’s episode, I share a story about a farmer
who trusted the wrong reference point,
and plowed his entire field crooked.
Maybe the reason we’re exhausted isn’t because we’re failing.
Maybe we’ve been fixing our eyes on something that keeps moving.

This conversation isn’t about faking joy.
It’s about cultivating it, in grief, in tension,
in the hidden places where roots grow.

What if addiction isn’t the root, but the symptom? What if addiction isn’t the root,
but the symptom?

What if beneath the behavior
there’s pain that’s never been named?

This week’s conversation is about
truth, trauma, and the slow work of healing.

And the kind of redemption
only God can write.
