Spring has Sprung

We enjoyed a ridiculously mild winter up here in the Midwest, and despite having the chill return to the air over the past couple of days, we are soaking up a stunningly early Spring.

Signs of new life are exploding on every branch, the breeze is infused with the sweet scent of blossoms, and the lush green grass is once again tickling our soles.

Have I mentioned recently how much I adore Spring?

It could be because it is evidence that I have survived yet another Michigan Winter. Or maybe it’s because of the vibrant shade of renewal the earth is splattered with in the throes of this breath-taking transition.

I’m sure it’s both.

I find it fascinating how the flow of seasons so accurately represent the seasons of life we cycle through.

And while some Winters feel excruciatingly bare and are wrought with the aroma of decay, others are just long and dry.  Colorless and quiet.  And strangely isolating.

Winter is tough.  It always is and always has been.  But along with its looming presence comes the promise of Spring.  The gift of restoration.  Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.

And it is the hope and new life encapsulated in this promise that keeps us plodding through the bitter chill of Winter.

“For I am about to do something new.  See, I have already begun!  Do you not see it?  I will make a pathway through the wilderness.  I will create rivers in the dry wasteland”  Isaiah 43:19

My hubby and I are thankful to be basking in the beauty of a life-season infused with new life and fresh opportunity.  All sorts of newness is springing up around us and we are just reveling in the sweetness of it all.

Learning to let go, to step out, to press in, and to embrace change is required for the transaction to take place.  And as one chapter draws to a close, an even more exciting one begins.

And so it is with Spring.

It never ceases to amaze me how extravagantly God paints His love for us in creation, on branches and butterfly wings.

Rather than a black and white, two-dimensional world, He gave us an intricately crafted canvas adorned with the most exquisite of hues.

From the explosion of colors, and the smorgasbord of scents, to the seemingly endless variety of wee creatures, Spring has a way of tickling our fancy and delighting our senses like no other season.

Because it reminds us who holds the brush, and who carefully applies the strokes.

Purposeful and passionate, He paints.

A surrendered life pulses with possibility.  Vibrates with life.  Speaks of love.

For Spring has clearly sprung.

Then shame convinces us to hide.

But God’s first response to human failure wasn’t condemnation.
It was a question: "Where are you?"
Not because He didn’t know.
But because healing requires that we name where we are,
and freedom comes as we choose to bravely step out of hiding.
